Description

The planetary nebula Shapley 1 can be found in the Norma constellation. About a thousand light-years from Earth, the nebula was first spotted by astronomer Harlow Shapley in 1936. It has a ring-like shape that is unusual for planetary nebulas, which are usually bipolar or spherical. Planetary nebulas are formed when low-mass stars eject their outer layers at the end of their lives, leaving behind a hot white dwarf. Taken over several nights with a 20-inch telescope
