Description

Due to the bad weather, I decided to look for some old subjects and re-elaborate them. I was surprised when I found an archived folder in which I had forgotten some sessions about this Galaxy, taken between 9 and 12 months ago.
So, also due to the current galaxy season, I decided to try to work on these files. The result is not so bad, but I had to discard a lot of frames.
The Pinwheel Galaxy (Messier 101 or M 101 or NGC 5457) is a very interesting object, located in the Ursa Major constellation, about 21 million light-years away from Earth.
It shows us its plan and we can see the whole development of the spiral arms, which are rich in ionized hydrogen (HII) regions. Here there are intense star formation processes.
M101 is about 170.000 light-years wide (the Milky Way is about 100.000 l.y. wide); it’s estimated to contain at least one trillion stars, many of which are blue or white supergiant, young and hot stars.

The picture was taken in Cordenons, from my home garden.
It’s a sum of 188 shots of 300” in LRGB and 17 shots of 600” in H-alfa.
