Description

IC63 and IC 59 are faint reflection and emission nebulae many times referred to as the Ghosts of Cassiopeia. They are about 610 light years from Earth and lie about 3 light years distant from Gamma Cas, the center star of the "W" forming the constellation Cassiopeia. The blue-white giant star Gamma Cas is about 14 times the radius of the Sun and about 55,000 times more luminous. The reflection of the star produces the blueish cast while the ionized hydrogen gas causes then to have a reddish glow.
