Description

Mars and The Seven Sisters (The Pleiades)

On April 1st 2019 Mars came within 3.3 degrees of The Pleiades (M45). I was able to see both even in the light polluted skies of the Bay Area. I have been planning for this for few weeks and it certainly looked like the weather will cooperate as it was sunny and clear all day. The plans was to drive to Davenport north of Santa Cruz. Unfortunately, mother nature had other ideas as a very thin layer of cloud & moisture moved in over the whole Bay Area and Santa Cruz an hour before sunset and forecast for Davenport became grim very quickly. I decided to still go ahead and try to photograph Mars chasing after the Pleiades and see what I can get out of this. I only had an hour to work with before Mars and The Pleiades fell below 20 degree.

When I started processing the pictures, I was not expecting anything great coming out of it but I was pleasantly surprised. It came out beautiful. Even though I was not able to capture the details blue reflection nebula that surrounds The Pleiades, the thin layer of moisture filtered and diffused the light
