Description

My second primary target of the Okie-Tex Star party 2021 - the star party is placed some awkwardly as far as night sky imaging is concerned since it is a transitionary period between the summer and winter objects, so I have taken to targeting my main telescope on 2 images throughout the week of the star party, usually switching shortly after midnight depending on the specifics. This one captured my attention a year before when I spent several nights capturing the nearby B18, through choice of this target was on the whim at the star party since the shape of it did not immediately garner my interest. Now that I see how it looks, I see a comparison between it and the Eagle Nebula (or perhaps the Statue of Liberty nebula), which led to my choice of title.

One other interesting object that appeared was a mysterious smear in the final stacks showing something was slowly moving through the telescope's FoV over the 6 nights of shooting. Due to the dispersion of the smear I thought maybe it was a dim comet and I knew 67P was in the Taurus area, but it was likely due to the somewhat poor transparency and seeing which plagued most of the nights that week. After querying a JPL site for asteroid positions in the area, I found I had captured minor planet 322 Phaeo, a 70km-wide asteroid discovered in 1891 in a 4.64 year-long orbit beyond Mars.

PreProcessing:
 - WBPP for Darks, Flats, Flat Darks calib
 - Cosmic Correction
 - Subframe Selector for image weights, heavily culled since transparency was lacking this year
 - Star Align, Local Normalization
- Image Integration, 2x Drizzle

Housekeeping:
- Crop
- DBE
- LFit R, G to B (which had the lowest noise for some reason?)
- Channel combine RGB
- Clone Stamped out smears caused by a transiting 322 Phaeon in L, RGB stacks

L Processing:
- Decon using DynamicPSF, StarMask
- Rista method TGVD, MMT
- Masked Stretched, Histogram Stretch
- PixelMath to apply HT stars onto MS image
- Rista ACDNR
- Curves: raised lower left point to 0.05 to distance dark nebula from clipping
- RangeMask/Hist Trans to brighten dim background nebula
- Dark Structure Enhance Script
- Curves to increase contrast

RGB Processing:
- Background Neutralization
- Photometric CC
- SCNR G
- Rista TGVD, MMT
- ArcSinH stretch + HT
- Rista ACDNR
- Ran all post-ACDNR L process for increasing contrast of background nebula
- SCNR G 50% using Star Mask
- SCNR G 50% Maskless
- LRGB using Star Mask with reduced CNR to preserve small star color
- LRGB with inverted Star Mask using greater CNR settings

LRGB Final Processing:
- SCNR G targeting stars
- Saturation to increase star color
- Nebula saturation with stars protected
- L Curve to increase background contrast
 - Large scale CNR using MLT, then small scale CNR using star mask
 - 2 passes MT for star reduction using star mask
 - Annotation and Signature watermark applied
