Description

The core of the Milky way galaxy is one of my favorite wide-field targets. This image was done to re-image an area visited last year, with longer integration time, and using an Astronomik L-3 UV-IR Filter in place of the Astronomik L filter to reduce the blue haloes around OB stars.

The Lagoon nebula, M8, is prominent in the central part of the image, and is well-framed within the dust-bound rift of the central Milky Way .... a small lagoon within a larger lagoon, if you will.  To its upper right is the Trifid nebula, M20, with its distinctive blueish and reddish regions. At upper left is the impressive globular cluster M22, visible just outside the galactic plane.  The brightness difference between the two halves of the Milky Way is startling at first glance, with wispy tendrils of dark dust cutting through the tightly packed clouds of stars. A truly stunning vista ....

This wide field image spans 13.8° x 9.7° of northwestern Sagittarius, and is oriented with north to upper right. It was acquired using a Samyang 85mm UMC lens at f4 and Canon 1100D camera operating at ISO 800, using an Astronomik L-3 filter.
