Description

A nifty disturbed 9.6 magnitude starburst spiral galaxy in Camelopardalis only 12 degrees from Polaris. I waited for some nights of good seeing to collect data to show the detail in the spidery dust lanes around the galaxies core. Unfortunately, the dust lane and HII regions in the broad outer arm doesn't show as well as I had hope, as that part of the galaxy just doesn't rise enough above the light pollution in my backyard to allow me to stretch the contrast enough to show it.

The galaxy is only about 5 arc minutes across, but is in fact a bit larger than our own galaxy based on its distance of roughly 87 million light years away. It seems a bit lonely out there, with the closest nearby galaxy being NGC 2146A that is actually 16 million light years closer, so not really an sibling in the same galaxy cluster.

Each of the 11 eight minute images used for this image were produce by live-stacking 240 two second exposures in Sharpcap.
