Description

M45 The Pleiades Nebula, processed to be close to natural color.

Total integration time: ~1 hr (160 subframes at 23 seconds; ISO 800)

Equipment: Canon 300mm f/4 at f/4 (75mm aperature) and a stock Canon 90D

Skies: Bortle 2/3 in Spruce Knob, WV between 3 to 4am August 2023.

Tracking: Fornax Lighttrack ii. No guiding.

Preprocessing: Calibrated in rawtherapee, including lens profile to address light falloff. Exported TIFFs into DSS and aligned/stacked.

Stretching/post-processing: Rnc-color-stretch for sky removal and color preserving stretch, using v1.02 to pinpoint blackpoint. Photoshop for additional curve work, which was to enhance contrast and saturation. Imagesplus64 for star reduction and minor sharpening. Photoshop then used for changing color space to sRGB and JPEG.

Flaws: Focus was off, eyes were tired so core of stars slightly off and star aberrations were greater than should be. Also used AMaZE rather than LMMSE demosaicing method, which probably wasn’t the best choice given some underlying noise in image.
