Description

These Astrobin Debut Objects are located in the constellation of Hydra at a declination of +3 degrees.  The galaxies are too far apart to be interacting.

NGC 2713 is a huge magnitude 12 spiral galaxy located 220 million light years away.  It is 3.5 arc-minutes wide, which at that distance corresponds to a diameter of twice the size of our Milky Way, at 230,000 light years. It is inclined such that it is about 20 degrees from edge-on to our view.

NGC 2716 is a magnitude 13 lenticular galaxy located 170 million light years away.  It is only 1 arc-minute wide and has a diameter of 60,000 light years.

Both of these are LINER-type galaxies, believed to each have an active galaxy nucleus with a brighter core and an associated supermassive black hole.

The disk of NGC 2713 is wonderfully detailed for being so far away.  I especially like the bright short arc of blue star clouds in the outer disk rim, which appears that it may be caused by interaction with a small bright companion.
