Description

This bipolar reflection nebula, also known as GN 20.22.7, is located 3900 light years away in the constellation of Cygnus at a declination of +42 degrees.  The nebula spans 1 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a width of about 1 light year.

I noticed this small object in the right center of my image of NGC 6914 and I wanted to get a closer look at it.  It is located in a region of the sky with bright emission and reflection nebulae.

At the center of the nebula is the magnitude 17 central star HBC 694.  The nebula is seen against the dark cloud Lynds 897.

According to the 1993 paper, “Imaging polarimetry of the bipolar nebula Parsamyan 22”, this bi-polar nebula is the remnant of the circumstellar material of a recently formed star which is in the later stages of pre-main-sequence evolution.  The circumstellar disk obscures the central star and collimates the outflows from it.

The paper suggests that this object is very similar in form to that of two other objects, LkHA 208 and LkHA 233.  A comparison of these 3 objects is shown in my mouseover.
