Another common target that is great through binoculars, but reveals even more tendril wisps of reflection nebula through a refractor, my goal was to capture some of the spectacular colors a reflection nebula gives us for free every night (when there aren't clouds or a full moon nearby! :-) )
This is my first year where I am starting to appreciate the value of pure luminance capture compared to OSC or a synthetic luminance. Just another tool you have to weigh based on sky conditions and winds dictating your amount of acquisition time.
Processing Notes:
- I have started to use Lightroom as a final stage to get the last bit of adjustments to color. While I have no doubt I can do the same thing with Pixinsight curves, there's something to be said about easily doing a before and after alteration comparison. Especially when color blind astrophotographers like myself use the differentials to make all the .. difference? compared to what everyone else can just visually grasp at a single glance.
- Seriously, if you haven't tried Lightroom for your final color adjustments, give it a shot if you already have the Adobe Suite. You will veer away from scientific imaging to artistic captures but sometimes that may be your goal in this hobby for a particular target.
