Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a galaxy quartet located 0.5 billion light years away in the constellation of Hercules at a declination of +33 degrees.

The bright large elliptical galaxy near the center of the image is NGC 6162 / Hickson 82a.  This galaxy spans 1.2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a huge diameter of 200,000 light years.

The other 3 galaxies here are all smaller but more interesting in structure.  The barred spiral ring galaxy to the left is NGC 6163 / Hickson 82b.  It is slightly smaller than NGC 6162.  The odd looking galaxy below is NGC 6163 / Hickson 82.  This is a fascinating one with a large dust lane – it looks like a late stage galaxy merger to me.   Finally, the edge-on barred spiral at lower right is LEDA 58231.  It has a large bulge.

Except for the merged galaxy, none of these galaxies show much in the way of disturbance despite being members of the same cluster.
