Description

While I was fortunate enough to collect RGB stars for my last posting of the Cave Nebula, I decided to try another target as the night appeared relatively clear.  So, I slewed the C11 @ f/10 to the Elephant Trunk (IC1396A) to capture some Ha data as the seeing appeared decent.  I was able to get 3 hrs worth of Ha data, good enough to get a nice close-up of this unusual area of nebulosity within the much larger ionized gas region IC 1396 located in the constellation Cepheus about 2,400 light-years from Earth.  The Elephant's Trunk Nebula is now thought to be a site of star formation, containing several very young (less than 100,000 yr) stars.  And I need to invest one day in an automated rotator as my scope is too high up in the observatory to go manually turning it.
