Description

Another backyard galaxy, ho hum?  No way!  What a fantastic and beautiful galaxy to study.  It's one of our relatively close neighbors while not as dramatic as M82 or M81, I found it enjoyable to capture and process.

In this image I blended Ha after extracting from dual narrowband data using APP which has a great tool for us OSC camera users.  I had to boost the Ha more than I usually do.  You can see nebula in the first and second arms top and bottom.  Like most of us, I wanted to get more on this target, but alas cloudy now for a while and the moon is waxing.

from the various web sources:  NGC 4236 (also known as Caldwell 3) is a barred spiral galaxy and is a member of the M81 Group, at a distance of approximately 11.7 MLY's.   It is large (its length is more than 2/3 the Moon’s width) but has a very low surface brightness, meaning it is barely brighter than the background glow of the sky (mean surface brightness is 24.3 mag/asec2; outer arms are much fainter). This makes it quite a difficult object to image.

(I wish I could say I understood that 2nd to the last sentence 🤪)
