Description

Bode's Galaxy (Messier 81, NGC3031) is a Grand Design Spiral Galaxy found in Ursa Major. At 12 million light years away, it can be seen with a small telescope from a relatively dark site. It's neighbor, the Cigar Galaxy (Messier 82, NGC3034) is a Starburst Galaxy, also about 12 million light years away. Finally, NGC 3077 in the left of this image is a disrupted elliptical galaxy estimated to be about 12.8 million light years away. All of these are considered part of the M81 galaxy group.
