The Crescent Nebula (NGC6888 or the cosmic brain as I like to call it) - is an emission nebula about 5000 light-years away from Earth. It's formed by the stellar wind from the central star, colliding with the slower moving wind ejected by the same star when it became a red giant. You can see the result on this picture - a shell and two shock waves one moving outward and one moving inward.

This was the first time I shot and post processed the data captured with an Optolong L-eXtreme filter (dual-band). Took me about 6 hours and 3 YouTube tutorials to go from picture number 2 to the 1st one - and there's still a lot to learn. I think I've reached my current post processing skills with this one. So happy I could capture the blue-ish OIII (Oxygen-3) bubble! Such a beautiful object this is.

The weather here has been terrible for couple of months. Since the end of May I managed to spend 3 nights on this object. These were very short nights (northern Poland = short, white nights. Basically midnight to 2AM). During one cloudless night fog appeared and more than 1h of data went to trash. The other night was a bit windy so I had to remove some data as well. During the 3rd night my dew heater stopped working at some point so the mirror got a bit wet... Eventually I ended up with only 2h 12min of data - after 3 nights, after 2 months!

But I plan to capture much more, and retry when I there's at least 6-8 hours of data.

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
Promotions by Submitters When 3 distinct Submitters promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for Top Pick status. This requirement, in addition to anonymization of images and distribution to only a subset of them, prevents biases and ensures that the best images are selected.
Promotions by Reviewers When 3 distinct Reviewers promote the image, it moves on to the next stage of the process: evaluation for IOTD status.
Early dismissal Staff members have a lot of images to inspect on a daily basis, and they can dismiss images if they believe they don't meet the requirements for IOTD/TP selection. If an image is dismissed 5 times, it's removed from the process. This streamlines the process and ensures that any bias present in promotions could be overruled by other staff members.
