This is a narrowband image in SHO palette with RGB stars replacing the narrowband stars.

SH2-86 is an emission nebula located in Vulpecula.  It is ionized by the open cluster of blue stars, NGC 6823.  Numerous sources refer to the whole nebula incorrectly by the name NGC 6820, which is actually only the small reflection nebula in the lower center part of the image.

The intense radiation from the central stars is responsible for shaping the pillars, dark globules and towering clouds of the surrounding nebula.  The most distinctive feature of the nebula is the “elephant trunk” pillar that points to the central part of the cluster.
