Description

M34 is an open cluster located 1700 light years away in the constellation of Perseus at a declination of 43 degrees.  It is a magnitude 5.2 cluster which spans 48 arc-minutes in our apparent view.  This corresponds to a diameter of 24 light years.

M34 contains over 100 stars and is one of the nearest Messier objects to us. The cluster is primarily comprised of hot blue stars, but several orange giants are also visible. A number of faint galaxies can be seen in the background. I think that the "Spiral Cluster" nickname requires an active imagination.

This image is part of my effort this year to update and improve my Messier Collection.
