Description

Pelican Nebula (IC 5070).  I had it all worked out.  I was on my annual trip to North Carolina's Outer Banks, and the pelicans that patrolled the beaches inspired my choice of target.  But it didn't work out that way.  The weather was uneven at best. When the clouds scattered, smoke took their place.  I did not have one clear night during the trip (the days were much better). A lovely vacation, to be sure, but an astrophotographic letdown.  Fortunately, once I returned to Virginia, and after months of poor conditions, July began to show promise.  I may have left the pelicans behind, but the Pelican Nebula was still in reach.  I spent two short summer nights grabbing dual-narrowband data on this classic target.  I had never shot it before, but based on this result, I will surely return.
