Description

An emission nebula located around 5200 light years from Earth. The stars in the center are estimated to be newly formed, only 5 million years old. They are also considered responsible for the glow of the surrounding clouds. The overall red color is thought to be a result of an outflow of ultraviolet radiation, from the new stars, removing electrons from the hydrogen in the gas clouds. The scale of the nebula is about 90 light years in diameter, yet is visible due to the very small ionized gas atoms and glowing plasma.
