Description

My first image since late April, there just weren’t many clear nights in Oklahoma during the May-June period so I quit setting my scope up for a couple of months.  In July finally some clear nights returned and I got a chance to try my new Televue NPR-2073 reducer.  I’ve been waiting for this part to be available for a while. It brings my NP101is to f4.3, a good speed for narrowband in Bortle 5 and not so fast that I need a new set of filters.  The wider field is fun too.  So, this image is first light with this new reducer.  Perhaps one of the earlier images with an NPR-2073 reducer on Astrobin because I had to add the part to the database (or maybe I’m just entering it wrong).

I chose IC1318 as a target so I could compare the FOV with my image last year without the reducer.

I really enjoy narrowband (I’m in Bortle 5) but I struggle with the colors. I’m wanting more balance, less saturation and smooth color transitions in my SHO.  My O-III signal was weak on this target so to get more blue without the noise I gathered more O-III, around 12 hours, still not enough.  A lot of integration of O-III and S-II also seemed to improve the detail zoomed in at full-res (please have a look at full-res).  Ha wasn’t a problem, it was strong.  I also did some RGB for stars but decided not to use the data, I’m still undecided on the appearance of RGB stars in SHO Hubble palette images.

Overall, I’m pleased with the image and the new reducer.
