Description

With my partner we recently spent a weekend in an AirBnB overlooking the vineyards of Awatere Valley, with hot tubs under Bortle 2/3 skies. I had permission to bring my astrophoto gear along and my intention was to set up early, and image/control/monitor from the comfort of the hot water with my tablet. Sounded like a rather unusual way of doing astrophotography and I was very much looking forward to it (I'm easily amused)!

However, as often is the case in New Zealand, the weather gods decided that I shall only be granted 1 or 2 hours of partially clear skies with high humidity and constant high clouds zipping down from the mighty mountains behind us towards Cook Straight ...

Instead of deep sky imaging, I resorted to shoot a 4x2 panorama with our trusty lil' Sony RX100 MkIV. I think each tile is 20" or 25" at F1.8 and most likely 3200ISO. The back screen doesn't show much when pointing at the night sky so I shot this more or less "blind", and stitching got a bit messy with an interesting "error" creeping in the Milky Way.
