Description

I captured this image of the North America Nebula (NGC 7000) on the left and the Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) on the right in the constellation Cygnus on September 27, 2022. These are both emission nebulae belonging to the same interstellar cloud of ionized hydrogen about 2,600 light years from us.

The North America Nebula gets its name since it appears similar to the shape of the continent. A dark notch of interstellar dust forms the "Gulf of Mexico". The nebula is about 90 light years long from top to bottom in this image.

The Pelican Nebula is just off the "east coast" of the North America Nebula. You can make out the shape of a pelican's head and bill. This nebula is about 30 light years in diameter.
