Description

I noticed on the GONG H-alpha Network Monitor that, for the first time in quite a while, two large sunspots were visible (AR2785 and AR2786.) I am not particularly experienced with solar imaging, but I could not resist the chance to observe them. I captured the image above through a Coronado PST 40 using my ZWO ASI 178MM. I used a lower gain to capture the features of the chromosphere. After stacking and processing, the resulting image was overlaid onto a second image acquired at a higher gain setting, this time optimized for prominences. Given the dynamic nature of the sun's surface, I acquired video in short bursts and stacked the best 50%.

My PST 40 is only the "single stack" version, and has a wider band pass (0.1 nm) than many higher-end instruments used my dedicated solar astronomers. With this in mind, the contrast is somewhat limited, but still much better than what can be observed with a white light filter.

Revision B includes a negative image superimposed on a background image obtained at higher gain to better show the prominences.
