Description

M 97, the Owl Nebula, approximately 2,030 ly away in Ursa Major, about 8000 yrs old, just under 2 ly across. The central star is evolving into a white dwarf -- it's extremely hot, surface temperature around 123,000 K. Image made from 112 120-sec exposures at 200 iso on Feb 5, 2024. I love all the faint little smudges in the field -- they are distant galaxies. As they say in New England, they must be wicked-fah away.
