Description

Once again, my journey into Southern Hemisphere imaging has spurred me to research and learn more about the southern deep sky objects. As I pull the curtain back on this target, I have learned that the open cluster and adjacent emission nebula are in the southern constellation Carina and have been given the nicknames, the Gem Cluster (lower left) and the Gabriela Mistral Nebula (center). The latter due to due to its resemblance to a Chilean poet unbeknownst to me before researching this target. As I pull on the curtain further, I learn that the sash of red below the open cluster has been classified as Gum 30, part of a catalog of southern sky emission nebula authored by Australian astronomer Colin Stanley Gum. The catalog was published in 1955. I think Sky Safari aptly describes the central nebula in this image, NGC 3324, as an outlying part of the Eta Carina Nebula complex, sitting on its northwest corner. In fact, the center of Eta Carina Nebula lies just beyond the upper right corner of this image. How appropriate that the central subject of this image, named for a Chilean poet, was captured from Deep Sky West's facility in… Chile. :-)
