Description

My latest attempt at M51. Longer exposures definitely bring out more detail, but also increase noise. The wind was picking up and I only managed to stack 8 x 10m exposures. I am still struggling to work out how best to apply flat frames to clean up my images from dust motes, hence under-developed in Startools. These are the luminance images from my DSI-IIC averaged with a composite of 50 flat frames in Meade ASIP. Dark frames were automatically subtracted in Envisage.

Description: I processed this using George Morimosato's excellent Penumbra v0.6 designed for old Meade DSI cameras (www.neurohack.com/penumbra). This simple App aligns, combines, fixes gradients, and allows HDR stretching and image sharpening. I also increased the resolution for a smoother image. I don't think there is more detail than the original (processed in Startools), but I like the brighter image, even if the data is clipped to remove background noise and artefacts. What do you think?
