Description

This is a wide field shot of 3 degrees of sky in the Cygnus constellation at a declination of +47 degrees.  The image is a LRGB image.  I also took Ha subs but the final image does not include them - I felt that the Ha signal overpowered the delicate nature of the LRGB-only image.

The highlight at left is IC 5146, an emission and reflection nebula nicknamed the Cocoon Nebula.  This nebula is 15 light years wide and located 4000 light years away.  Ionized hydrogen gas gives the nebula a reddish glow.  The dark lanes within IC 5146 comprise Barnard 168.

Bluish dust-reflected starlight is visible in some areas of the nebula.  The most notable reflection nebula, vdB 147, is just to the right of IC 5146 as shown on the mouseover.

The series of dark nebulae extending far to the right of the nebula include many Lynds dark nebula (LDN) objects of varying opacity and color, from light gray to brown to black.
