Description

Breaking news: In what amounts to meteorological miracle, there was fair to good seeing over Denver last night! May this be a bit of positive energy that will help election day go peacefully and leave everyone safe and sound! Anyway, I was able to record twelve 25-s videos at about 65 fps for a total of 19,500 frames. I had AstroStakkert select the best ten frames from each video for a total of 120 stacked frames. For once, there is enough structure visible in the image that I can point out a thing or two. There is a cloud over the north polar region. Typically these are composed of water ice crystals. In the center of the lower left quadrant of the planetary disk is a large semicircular ring opening upward that encloses lighter material surrounding a large dark patch. This is Solis Lacus, a feature known as the Eye of Mars. Percival Lowell believed that many Martian canals converged there and concluded that it must be the capital city of Mars! Directly above Solis Lacus is a streak of lighter albedo that is sort of like the eyelid. This is Valles Marineris, a series of canyons of immense size, measuring some 4000 km in length, 200 km in width and 7 km deep (23,000 ft). Imagine hiking down from the top of Mount Everest to sea level. That's a good model for a trek to the bottom of Valles Marineris!
