The Pinwheel Galaxy - M101

This image shows much fainter spiral arms extending far away from the galaxy which is visible on the top of this image. After processing the data I thought of these as artifacts but it clearly shows a pattern extending from the disk, I tried to confirm with other images on the internet but I couldn't find any images which have these fainter arms extending much farther from the galaxy.

M101, popularly known as the Pinwheel Galaxy, is one of the best-known spiral galaxies at a distance of 23 million light-years in distance in the northern circumpolar constellation, Ursa Major. The giant spiral disk of stars, dust, and gas is 170,000 light-years across or nearly twice the diameter of our galaxy, the Milky Way. M101 is estimated to contain at least one trillion stars. The galaxy's spiral arms are sprinkled with large regions of star-forming nebulae. These nebulae are areas of intense star formation within giant molecular hydrogen clouds. Brilliant young clusters of hot, blue, newborn stars trace out the spiral arms. The galaxy fills a region in the sky equal to one-fifth of the area of the full moon

Views by Submitters (available since September 19th, 2023) Every image is assigned to 50% of available Submitters. In the event that at least 80% of them don't view the image before its time in the IOTD/TP process expires, it's assigned to the other 50% of Submitters and the process begins anew.
