Description

Sh2-174, Valentine’s Rose travels round the North Celestial Pole at a distance of ca. 20 arc degrees. It is commonly regarded as a planetary Nebula, but not everybody agrees. There’s a strange history behind this target. The White Dwarf, inside the nebula which is supposed to be the remnant of a star creating the nebula, travels at a slightly different speed than the nebula itself. Also, a planetary nebula usually has a bright edge, brighter than the inside of the nebula. Sh2-174’s edges are rather diffuse. The white dwarf is also about 100 times older than the nebula's circumference would suggest. Anyway, Simbad database lists this under planetary nebulae, so be it.It is about a 1000 lightyears from us and its diameter is roughly 20 arc minutes.
