Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a distorted face-on spiral galaxy located 230 million light years away in the southern constellation of Pisces Austrinus at a declination of -35 degrees. The galaxy spans 1 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to an actual diameter of about 70,000 light years. Little information exists about this object.

It appears that two spiral galaxies may be in the last stages of merging, which makes our face-on view of this encounter very unique in terms of the complex spiral arm and dust band configuration. I would love to see more of what is going on in the central region. Part of it has a bluish cast, which suggests that the disturbance may have kicked off some star formation. There is a black and white Hubble image of half of this object, but I didn’t find it to be as illuminating as usual.

The small thin galaxy to the right, PGC 67401, looks interesting but I could not find out anything about it.
