Description

The is an area of dark and reflection nebulae in the Perseus molecular cloud.  NGC1333 is sometimes called the Embryo nebula.  Roughly 1,000 light years away from us, it is an active star forming region with many young stars still embedded in the dense clouds in which they were formed.

This image was captured during a recent family vacation at a Bortle 1 spot in the Bahamas.  This was the last target on my imaging plan for the trip.  During the week that I was there I struggled with fast moving low clouds on most nights and lost two nights entirely to overcast conditions.  As a result I did not have as much clear sky time as I had hoped.  Never the less, I had finished my other two projects and I had one full night left so I figured I would give it a shot and make the most of it.  I was able to cobble together 4.75 hours of integration time before heavy clouds and rain showers moved in.

Only 4.75 hours of data is not nearly enough time to do this target justice and I knew it would be a huge challenge to produce a good quality image with such a limited data set.  Indeed it took about 15 hours of tinkering and trying different techniques to tease out the data and control the noise.

I suppose I could try an experiment and capture more data from my Bortle 8 home sky and see what happens....  Barring that I will definitely add more data to this project next year when I can get back out to a B1 site.

Thanks for stopping by.
