I did think about this target for quite some time and was more shying away from imaging it due to two things: One, the position above horizon for me to image it and second, it's brightness or better faintness. Last month I decided to try it with 10minute exposures, also something I had never done before. The earliest I could get to it was just before midnight pointing into my most light polluted sky area and 4 hours later it would disappear in behind the first rows of palm trees. The subs looked promising the next morning and I decided to add one more night. Now after having processed the data I wish I had added an additional 2 nights to it... Next year it will be.

The Dolphin Head Nebula is located towards the center of the constellation Canis Mayor, the big dog. Sirius, our brightest star in the night sky (V -1.46) is 8° above the nebula. Sh2-308 is bubble -like and surrounds a Wolf-Rayet star called EZ Canis Majoris. The star is in a pre-supernova state of its stellar evolution. It did shed its outer hydrogen layers some 70,000 years ago and the stellar winds from this event are pushing material outwards sweeping up other slower material from the earlier evolution of this star. The nebula is approximately 4500 LY from Earth with an apparent magnitude 7 and a radius of approximately 30 LY.

Description: Now with a bit more PI experience and the new tools, I went for the first revision on this target. I wanted to see if I could get more of the surrounding dust to show up and also getting a bit more contrast in the nebula itself. I think...maybe I could still get a bit better definition on some structures or maybe this is just the best resolution I can get out of my little scope...
