Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a small 5 galaxy cluster located from 280 to 320 million light years away in the constellation of Pisces at a declination of -2 degrees. I could find nothing written in detail on this object. It is the 97th entry in the Hickson galaxy small cluster catalog.

The 5 galaxies, all in the upper right portion of the image, are labelled as follows in the Astrobin mouseover – the edge-on galaxy IC 5356, the spiral ring galaxy IC 5359, the large left elliptical PGC 72408, the large right elliptical PGC 72404, and the small galaxy PGC 72405. The large ellipticals are about 200,000 light years in diameter, while the edge-on spiral is 80,000 light years in diameter. The 5 galaxies do not appear to have much disturbance and therefore are probably not close enough to each other to be interacting.

Many other galaxies are also seen in the image. The grand design spiral galaxy at lower left (PGC 72457) is the same distance away as the Hickson cluster but is not formally part of the cluster. The bright galaxy (PGC 72461) in the lower left corner is much closer to us.

I also like the tiny faint C-shaped galaxy at the center right edge of the image, which is not identified on the Astrobin mouseover.
