Description

IC 1396 is a prolific star-forming region that contains many hot, young stars. The most powerful of these, visible in the center of the second photograph (which is actually a binary triple star system called Σ 2816) ionizes the gasses in IC 1396 and lights them up for us to see. The trunk, IC 1396A, is between us and Σ 2816 and is made up of very dense gas and dust, which accounts for its dark appearance. But there’s a lot going on in there. The trunk is forming new stars at a brisk clip, and over time will change its shape dramatically.

Description: With the terrible weather for the last six weeks, it was time to revisit some data from the fall to give it a little better treatment.
