This picture represents a personal technical success for me because it is the first time I have been able to shoot at a focal length of 2800mm unguided. This required tearing down my entire imaging train, remeasuring everything to 0.1 mm to ensure as close backfocus as possible, realigning everything with a Hotech laser collimator, and using Metaguide to recollimate on a focused star. Then, after using the primary mirror to get best FWHM at native backfocus, fine-tuning focus further with the rear cell Moonlite EdgeHD CHL 2.5 focuser. After ensuring all of that was as spot-on as possible, I then updated my mount with up-to-date UTC/Earth rotation data, ambient temperature and pressure to build a sky model accounting for refraction at my location.

The result is that I was able to take a picture at much longer focal length and probably could have done at least 120 second subs if it wasn't for the wind. I settled on 60 seconds, and at that length was getting stars good eccentricity. Another nice side effect of doing this process was that, by removing the EdgeHD focal reducer, I found field curvature dropped substantially.

So here we have the Sliced Onion Galaxy, NGC 3344 (aka UGC 5840), as it looked approximately 22.5 million years ago.

Description: For this revision, I utilized the magic of Multiscale Linear Transformation and adjusted bias in a few layers to bring out finer details. I also adjusted the color saturation curves because I felt like the hue was underwhelming in the original.
