Description

The Rosette Nebula (also known as Caldwell 49) is an H II (atomic Hydrogen that is ionized) region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy.  The cluster and nebula lie at a distance of about 5,000 light-years from Earth ,  measure roughly 130 light years in diameter and is estimated to be around 5 million years old. The radiation from the young stars  near the center  (NGC2244) excites the atoms in the nebula, causing them to emit radiation , which is the red color that predominates the gas in the region. The mass of the nebula is estimated to be around 10,000 solar masses.  This image was collected with the scope configured as F/4.
