Description

This Astrobin Debut Object is a pair of interacting irregular galaxies located 45 million light years away in the constellation of Virgo at a declination of +3 degrees. In his Arp catalog, Dr. Arp classified this object into the category of Interacting Double Galaxies.

The top galaxy is NGC 4809. This magnitude 14 galaxy spans 2 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 25,000 light years. The bottom galaxy is NGC 4810. This magnitude 15 galaxy has a diameter of 15,000 light years.

A surprising amount of structure is visible in both of these galaxies. Numerous blue star clusters are seen, likely initiated from the interaction of these 2 objects. The galaxies look to be connected by a star stream bridge, although our single view persepctive doesn’t allow us to confirm this.
