Description

This is for me one of the most beautiful regions of the night sky. It includes several nearby nebulae, in the celestial sphere, of the star Antares, the brightest star in the constellation of Scorpio (and in the image).

We can see in this image:

Reflection nebulae: the yellowish one, reflecting light from the red supergiant Antares, and the bluish one above, which reflects light from the Rho Ophiuci ternary system, which has two blue giants at the center of the system.

Emission nebulae: the reddish one, just below Antares, and another one a little higher. They are clouds of atomic hydrogen ionized due to excess ultraviolet radiation from nearby stars. Thus, a neutral hydrogen atom loses its electron (is ionized) and in the process emits reddish light. These reddish regions are known as HII regions (once-ionized hydrogen), or as many people know the famous H+ in chemistry.

Dark nebulae: dense clouds of gas and dust that almost completely block light from passing through them. They are identified by the contrast with the sky around them, which is always more starry or brighter.

Globular clusters: M4, M80 and NGC 6144 (identifiable in the second photo). They are astronomical structures composed of a large number of stars that are gravitationally bound. These clusters are spheroidal, featuring a dense distribution of stars at their centers. They are considered some of the oldest objects in the universe, composed of very old stars and poor in heavy elements.

This photo was taken in the buffer zone of the Desengano State Park, inside the Gospoda site. Desengano State Park is one of the darkest regions in the state of Rio de Janeiro and recently received certification as a Dark Sky Park, the first, and so far, only one in Latin America.
