Description

I've wanted to start imaging this object ever since I saw a 10 year time lapse video of this target taken by an amateur. It's amazing that we can actually see it expand. So many deep sky objects move so slowly compared to the human experience that we probably wont see any change in our lifetime. But the Crab Nebula began with a super nova that is believed to have been observed in China in 1054. Too bad we did not have CMOS cameras and tracking mounts back then, as that would make for a hell of a time lapse! As they say, the next best time to start is now.

Initially I thought that my Z61 didn't have enough reach to capture this object, so I ordered something bigger. That was in February, and unfortunately I'm still waiting for it to arrive so I figured I better start now and see what I can do. I used 2x drizzle to get a little more resolution and was actually pretty happy with how it turned out despite only having shot 90 frames per channel. It's still a little small compared to what I've seen from longer focal lengths, so let's hope my big scope arrives before M1 sets below the horizon this year.
