Description

Normally this image is shown with the M97 (the Owl Nebula) over M108 (referred to as the surfboard), but with my FOV, side by side worked better.  This image isn't bad but I was hoping for awesome, which just didn't happen.  I captured this over 2 nights and had hoped 12 to 13 hours of data, end up with 8 as clouds moved in early the 2nd night and haven't left.  Plus the first night images ended up being marginal as I could not get good flats to eliminate all the dust in the air.  The morning after the first capture, I started my flats and noticed the inside of my scope had totally dewed over (I guess bringing it in to the garage and placing the light monitor over the scope caused all the humidity from the night to take over).  So I had to take over the camera and vent out my scope to clear the humidity.  I had rotated my camera to get both objects in the FOV and when I put the camera back on I wasn't able to match my rotation, so my flats were ineffective and my images had a ton of noise.  I was hoping for more imaging time and I still may try, but I decided to post this as is.

These 2 object lie about 1 degree away from each other in the constellation Ursa Major.  M108 is about 45 million light years away but you can still see decent detail even with moderate size scopes.  M97 is a planetary nebula, one of four planetary nebula in Messier's catalog.  M97 is estimated to be around 2,600 light years away.
