Description

This object is a classic Magellanic spiral galaxy located 90 million light years away in the constellation of Eridanus at a declination of -19 degrees.  It spans 1.7 arc-minutes in our apparent view, which corresponds to a diameter of 40,000 light years.

Magellanic galaxies have the following characteristics:
-       Off-center white stellar bar
-       One dominant arm
-       Blue star formation areas
-       Small diameter (typically between 15,000 to 40,000 light years)

As seen in the mouseover, this galaxy looks similar to its namesake, the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC).  I am not able to reach the LMC from my location, so this image is from the ESO telescope.

Compared to the LMC, NGC 1359 is:
-       3 times larger in actual size - 45,000 ly vs 15,000 ly
-       600 times further away – 90 million ly vs 160,000 ly
-       200 times smaller to our apparent view – 1.7 arc-minutes vs 6 degrees

Several more distant spiral galaxies are seen in the background.
