Description

Comet P12/Pons-Brooks and Jupiter April 11, 2024, from Robinson Crater north of Flagstaff, Arizona, USA. The dust and ion tails are still crazy—especially how ballooned out the head of the dust tail is vs. the coma and the displaced lump in the ion tail further up. Through 15x70 binoculars, the view is a lot simpler: a well condensed coma with a nicely fanned tail that stretches about 2/3 of a degree vs. the 2 degrees visible in the photo.

The spot I like on Robinson Crater was really popular that night for some reason compared to the usual desolation. Passed someone on the way up, found another person attempting to camp there with their 5th wheel before they maybe grew uncomfortable with me parking further down the road & setting up astro gear and they took off. Then someone else who blasted up the road & realized they had to turn around at the gate. Some good, headlighty, dusty fun at points.

The Pixinsight comet workflow is making more sense now but still a major grind. I also don't think RC Astro StarXterminator likes the R5's high-resolution. Extracted comet backgrounds are littered with large scale lumpy textures using the 'large overlap' option. And even worse in default mode with big checkerboard patterns. Anyway the experiments continue.

Description: Re-did Comet workflow in PixInsight to avoid use of StarXterminator due to large scale noise it was introducing. Switched to batching the images into 8 groups so that rejection alone could be used during integration to remove stars from the comet-only image. Noise control was much better this way.
