Description

CTB1 is an interesting object that has had its history of erroneous catalog entries. It is also known as Abell 85, and was considered for quite some time to be a planetary nebula, but is now well known that it is in fact a supernova remnant. This object was also mistakenly cataloged as an HII region in Beverly Lynd's catalog of bright nebulae, its entry there being LBN 576. The CTB entry is from the Caltech Observatory list B catalog of radio sources. CTB1 is a source of radio, X-ray and optical emissions. Some studies report a pulsar at the center of this object as a result of the supernova explosion.

When planning for this object I knew I was going after a challenge from my light polluted skies in the middle of Washington DC. Stating that it is FAINT is an understatement, 10 minutes of 3nm OIII subs showed NOTHING. In this case, the skies kicked my butt and while I have thrown the processing kitchen sink at this, it is barely salvageable. Not my best work but you have to make peace with your projects, and let them go out into the wild. This object needs at least twice as much integration time in each channel (Ha, OIII) and from what I have seen would also benefit from adding SII to add more structure. I might revisit it next year and add more data to it.
