Description

Messier 20: SHO Using a New Narrowband-Extraction Script

Deep Sky West TAO150, Chile

Method:

I am developing a new PI script that extracts a “pure” emission line using the knowledge of how that emission line contributes to a narrowband image compared to its corresponding broadband image. This image features the recovered “pure” emission lines.

A narrowband image, even with a 3nm bandwidth, contains much-unwanted background signal besides the wanted emission line. The background signal arises from many sources, a major one being that the filter includes radiation with wavelengths beyond the wings of the targeted emission line. Also contributing are other sources with emissions at or close to that of the wanted emission line. These can arise from molecular transitions, ion transitions, free-free transitions, etc. I have found a mathematical way to remove that excess background signal and better characterize the “pure” emission lines and, consequently their spatial variation across an image. This image is from the alpha-testing phase of that technique. I have rendered the image using the Hubble palette, with some subsequent color and intensity adjustments, but nothing radical or “forbidden.” In large part, the difference between this image’s appearance and that of other SHO renditions must be ascribed to the new method.

The PI Script will be made public after a more few refinements and additions, and a bit more testing. However, if you are an advanced image and would like to beta-test the script, please send a private email expressing this desire.
