Description

Like a beautiful Lotus rising from the surface of the cosmic ocean, the Great Orion Nebula is a diffuse nebula situated in Orion’s belt and is one of the most iconic celestial structures across history. It is estimated to be approximately 1344 light years away from the Earth, and around 24 light years across. At the heart of the nebula lies the Trapezium Cluster, which are young but very massive and radiant stars that illuminate much of the surrounding nebula. I also managed to captured the Running Man Nebula in the same shot.

Capturing the Great Orion Nebula is both easy and difficult. Most of the outer structures are easy to capture as they are relatively bright. However it is extremely difficult to not wash out the core of the nebula. Instead of using singular timed exposures and hoping HDR MultiScale Transform would somehow bring back detail, I chose to expose at 30s, 60s, 120s and 300s for R, G and B, along with 600s for H-alpha with just over 11 hours in total. Stacking, processing and compositing all of this was quite painful, but I think the end result speaks for itself — being able to see the all of the detail across the entire nebula. The subs themselves were captured using a Dreamscope 16” Newtonian Astropgraph at f/3.75 and an FLI PL16803 camera.
