Description

Although its listed in Messier's catalogue of deep sky objects, M24 is really an opening between Milky Way dust clouds. This window allows a view of distant stars from Earth towards the Milky Way that would otherwise be obscured. As such, the dense concentration of stars viewable in M24 reveals the sheer number of stars the Milky Way actually contains. Several dark nebulae are also present within M24, most notably Barnard 92 and 93.

IMO, M24 is one of the best objects to view visually as it really drowns the observer in a sea of stars giving a sensation of floating in space.
