Description

While imaging my recent planetary nebulae, I had an opportunity to do a quick flyby of M53, a metal-poor globular cluster in Coma Berenices.  M53 is one of the more outlying globular clusters, being about 60,000 light-years away from the Galactic Center, and almost the same distance from the Solar System.  It is not the most exciting cluster to image, not nearly as popular as the mighty M13 or even M3, and it is usually imaged along with its close neighbor, NGC 5053.  However, I wanted to grab a quick close look at it given it does have some interesting features, like the so-named tidal-like features including clumps and ripples around the cluster, and tails along the cluster's orbit in an east–west direction.  What is interesting is to compare images from the Hubble Telescope (version C) vs. ground-based telescopes (version D), as they look dramatically different.  It is unfortunate I don't have the weather now to capture more of this beautiful cluster as I only have 34' of luminance data and only a total of 3 hrs of total integration.
