Description

Markarian's Chain is a group of 9 galaxies in a line and is part of Virgo Galaxy Cluster which consists of 1300 - 2000 galaxies. If you zoom in you can see many small galaxies in this image.

M87, top left, is a supermassive elliptical galaxy with a mass 200 times more than Milky Way. M87 lies at the heart of Virgo cluster and is about 53 million light years from earth. M86 is the largest galaxy towards the bottom in this image, it has a super massive black hole at its center. M84, the large galaxy at the lowest center, is special in that it is falling towards us faster than any major observed deep space object, at 244 km/sec.
